Limits and possibilities of thermodynamic modelling of autogenous self-healing of concrete

Autogenous self-healing of water retaining concrete structures is included in Eurocode 1992-3 as a possibility to heal cracks up width 200 μm without additional repair. In this scenario flow through crack should result progressive closure the fracture, mainly due CaCO 3 precipitation, when certain hydraulic gradients are met, pH > 5.5 and concentration CO 2 remains < 40 mg*L -1 . The material composition not further restricted by regulation. However, despite standardization, healing effect seems be random practice, which requires research, while experiments aimed at quantifying autogenous expensive time-consuming. Thermodynamic models could support estimating different environments such groundwater or seawater exposure on self-healing. Moreover, adjusting chemistry according conditions construction sites changing design easily considered. study thermodynamic hydrated CEM I 52.5 R paste that exposed either simulated discussed concerning influence compared experimental literature data.
